Safe Cleanup Checklist

If you find rodent droppings, urine, or nesting materials, follow these CDC-recommended steps exactly. Skipping steps — especially ventilation and PPE — significantly increases exposure risk.

Do not sweep or vacuum. This aerosolizes particles and dramatically increases inhalation risk.

Before You Start

Ventilate the area for at least 30 minutes before entering — open windows and doors Do not enter if adequate ventilation is not possible

Personal Protective Equipment

Wear an N95 or higher respirator — surgical masks do NOT protect against hantavirus Wear rubber, latex, or vinyl gloves Wear goggles or a full face shield

During Cleanup

Spray urine, droppings, and nesting materials with a 10% bleach solution (1.5 cups bleach per gallon of water) Let the wet materials soak for 5 minutes before picking up Use paper towels to clean up — never sweep or vacuum, which aerosolizes particles

Disposal

Place all contaminated materials in a sealed plastic bag Double-bag and dispose in an outdoor trash container or follow local regulations

After Cleanup

Disinfect all surfaces with the 10% bleach solution Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after removing gloves
